Lab methodology
How we test
SoftwareToolApps is a score-first lab — not a press-release mirror. Here is exactly how a product earns (or loses) an STA Score.
Step 1
Clean install baseline
We note boot time, idle RAM, and disk free space before installing the product on a known-good profile.
Step 2
Real workflow stress
Browsers, Office/Docs, Zoom/Meet, and a few common utilities — not synthetic benches alone.
Step 3
Safety pass
Download source, installer behavior, restore points, and whether the tool overreaches on registry or drivers.
Step 4
STA Score weighting
Speed (30%), Safety (30%), Value (20%), Ease (20%). Editor's Choice requires ≥ 8.5 overall and clear buyer fit.
Hardware notes
Primary Windows lab: mid-range Intel/AMD laptops (16 GB RAM) on Windows 11. Mac coverage uses recent Apple silicon MacBooks for shortcut and browser guides. Results are directional — your mileage varies with disk health and background software.
Affiliate ethics
We may earn commissions from product links. Scores are not for sale. If a partner product underperforms, we say so — and we link the Affiliate Disclosure on every review.
